How would you feel if your pet went missing?
We know that when a much loved pet goes missing, it can be devastating. Even if your dog or cat is wearing a collar and tags, they can get detached from your pet and then what happens?
Most rescues and all dog wardens now carry scanners and scan every animal they take in. If the pet is microchipped, the rescue can request your details from PetLog and you can be quickly reunited with your pet.
Without a microchip, you have seven days in which to claim your pet before it is offered for rehoming or could even be put to sleep! In our area, we border three counties- Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and West Norfolk. If your pet is found wandering by a passer-by, they could take it to a rescue in any of those counties and you have seven days to find the correct rescue and get your pet back!
Why Microchip your pet?
We encourage all responsible owners to properly and permanently identify all your pets, whether it is a dog, cat, rabbit or ferret, so that, when found, they can be returned to you as quickly as possible.
As a pet owner, you have a legal requirement to ensure that your pet is under your control and that includes proper identification with a suitable collar and tag. In some cases, these can come astray and a microchip is vital as a permanent form of identification that will be in place for life.
Dog theft is currently on the increase. One way of proving the dog is yours is if it is microchipped! The only way for a dog thief to remove the identification is surgically which is simply too much trouble and they will just steal another dog on the off chance it isn't microchipped.
Cats quite often go missing and have a tendency to leave their collars and I.D tags hanging in tree branches somewhere. By microchipping your cat, you know it cannot "lose" it's I.D. and can be traced back to you.
Ferrets also have a habit of going astray. They see the smallest gap in a hutch/ferret court and they will get out anything big enough for them to fit their faces through. As many ferrets are still used by rabbiters and end up getting lost while "working", many ferrets get found and end up in rescues and if yours is microchipped, you will be reunited. Most Ferret rescues now microchip the ferrets they rehome.
During the summer months, many people have their rabbits in runs out in the garden and rabbits LOVE to dig. They will happily dig their way to freedom. Most rescues now use microchips to permanently identify any rabbits they rehome. Should your rabbit be found and handed to a rescue, it will be scanned and you will be contacted once your details have been acquired from the PetLog database.
It is just as easy and painless to implant a microchip in a ferret or rabbit as it is a dog or cat. Rest assured that we are dedicated to animals and that your pets wellbeing is of paramount importance to us.
Petlog
Petlog is the largest pet reunification service in the UK, and its database stores over 3,500,000 records. This is on hand 24 hours a day to authorised bodies such as animal wardens or animal welfare centres, who can scan the chips in found animals and trace their owners via the Petlog database.
